Angels We Have Heard on High
Words: Traditional French carol; trans. Crown of Jesus, 1862
Music: French carol melody
The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.
(Luke 2:20 NLT)
Thought for the Day: Sometimes our Christmas season ends with the viewing of the manger scene. We never get to the glorifying and praising, joining the angel chorus in the fullness of Gloria in excelsis Deo – “Glory to God in the highest.” Make Christmas complete this year by following the shepherds’ example, giving the highest glory to our Redeemer God.
William J. Petersen and Randy Petersen, Great Songs of Faith, 1995
Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply Echo back their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heav'nly song.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
