2020-06-20 Here I Am, Lord

I remember standing in a chapel service at Bible college one day feeling quite overwhelmed by my ministry. Not only was I working in a local church, but I was working in the local primary school as their chaplain.

Although I was doing my theological training, I realized there was so much more to ministry than College could ever teach me.

As I sat in the back row, removed from my surroundings by my heavy thoughts, we were asked to stand while we sang a communal song.  I obediently stood, but came abruptly to attention when I heard the words of the chorus:

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night.
I will go Lord, where you lead me.
I will hold Your people in my heart.

This hymn, based on the passage of Isaiah 6, was just the wake up call I needed. It doesn’t say that we have to have all the answers before we head on out; we just need to be willing.

Isaiah was an incredibly brave man to be willing to go to the Israelites – who were on the road to destruction – and highlight their wrong ways. He was not perfect, he didn’t have any super powers, he was just willing to serve God.

God delivers this question to every single one of His followers, “Whom shall I send?”

He may be asking you that exact question right now:  Whom shall I send?

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:

“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

Isaiah 6:8 (NKJV)

I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save.

I who make the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord.
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, where you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn a-way.

I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide,
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?
