2020-05-16 Give Me Jesus

This song is very simple in its lyrics and arrangement, and that is what makes it so beautiful. Add the history of where the song came from, and it becomes more beautiful. Remembering Jesus, who is more beautiful and believable than anything else we can worship makes it worship. Singing a simple song by those who were horribly oppressed is a great reminder of our own slavery to sin, and how the Lord is the only thing that could ever save and satisfy us —not our possessions, status, relationships, residence, or anything else.

Simply put, we want to remember Jesus as our only satisfaction in the morning, when we’re alone, in a midnight cry, and even in death. Give us Jesus!

God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.

Psalm 46:1 (NLT)

In the morning, when I rise,
in the morning, when I rise,
in the morning, when I rise,
give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
give me Jesus,
you may have all this world,
give me Jesus.

When I am alone,

when I am alone,

oh, when I am alone,

give me Jesus

Dark midnight was my cry,
dark midnight was my cry,
dark midnight was my cry,
give me Jesus.

Oh, when I come to die,
oh, when I come to die,
oh, when I come to die,
give me Jesus.
